SWAC Softball Final Score: Jackson State 2, Alabama State 1

GULFPORT, Miss.- The Jackson State softball team took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 2-1 win over Alabama State on Thursday afternoon.

Brooklyn Morris (12-8) started in the circle and picked up the win for Jackson State. The left-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on four hits.

At the plate, the Tigers were paced by Mari Stephens, who went 1-for-1 on the day with two walks. Jackson State got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning.

Ka'Liyah Gipson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State and get them on the board. The Hornets failed to push any runs across before the Tigers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning.

JSU scored once on a run-scoring single off the bat of Ariana Murillo, which brought the Tigers lead to 2-0. Alabama State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Jackson State still held on for the 2-1 win.

  • The Tigers out-hit the Hornets at a 5-4 clip.
  • Jackson State went 3-for-7 (.429) with runners in scoring position.
  • Morris faced 24 Alabama State hitters in the game, allowing 12 ground balls and six fly balls.
  • Stephens led the Tigers at the plate, going 1 for 1.
  • Alabama State was led offensively by Jaibriel Terrell, who went 1 for 3 with an RBI.
  • Kohana Pousson led the Hornets pitching staff, throwing 4.2 shutout innings.
