SWAC Softball Final Score: Jackson State 8, Bethune-Cookman 0

GULFPORT, Miss.- 
Freshman Jorgina Gant was impressive on Wednesday, throwing a three-hit shutout to lead the Jackson State softball team past the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 8-0.

Gant went the distance for Jackson State , giving up only three hits, walking two and striking out two.

Offensively, JSU was paced by Jace Jackson, who went 3-for-3 on the day with a home run and three RBIs. Meah Almaraz furnished a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs. Ka'Liyah Gipson also contributed for Jackson State, putting together two hits in two trips to the plate while adding a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Jackson State took the lead in the first inning, off of an RBI single from Almaraz, scoring Gipson from third base.
  • The Tigers then tacked on runs in the third and fourth innings, with their biggest output coming in the fourth when they scored six runs.
  • The big hit in that inning was a two-run single off the bat of Jackson.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Gant tossed a three-hit shutout for the Tigers.
  • Jackson led the Tigers at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs.
  • The Tigers out-hit the Wildcats at a 9-3 clip.
  • Jackson State went 6-for-11 (.545) with runners in scoring position.
  • Gant limited Bethune-Cookman to just 1-for-7 (.143) with runners in scoring position.
  • Gant also faced 20 Bethune-Cookman hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out two.
  • The Tigers drew four walks from Bethune-Cookman pitching.
  • Bethune-Cookman was led offensively by Aysiah Gonzalez, who went 1 for 2 with a double.
  • Halyne Gonzalez led the Wildcats pitching staff, throwing two innings of two-run ball.

The Tigers will face the winner out of the Alabama State on Thursday at 3:30 pm at the Gulfport Sportsplex in Gulfport, Miss.
