Prairie View A&M Claims SWAC Title With 23-21 Win Over Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss.- Prairie View A&M claimed a 23-21 win over Jackson State at Veterans Memorial Stadium in the 2025 Pepsi SWAC Football Championship Game presented by GM. The win marked the Panthers’ first league title since 2009. 

Prairie View A&M quarterback Cameron Peters was spectacular during the Panthers’ win over JSU as he passed for 294 yards with one TD pass to go along with 100 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown.

PVAMU linebacker Darrell Starling, Jr. set the tone for the Panthers defense contributing eight tackles including four solo stops to go along with a half sack, one tackle for loss and a interception. 

Jackson State (9-3) fought from behind the entire game despite tying the contest at 7-all with 11:20 remaining in the second quarter as Prairie View A&M (10-3) used three field goals from Diego Alfaro to extend the lead to 16-7.

The Tigers would not go away as they used a 22-yard touchdown by Ja'Naylon Dupree 5:09 to play in the third to trim the deficit to 16-14, and a two-yard run from Ahmad Miller that trimmed the lead to 23-21 with 1:37 remaining the quarter.

Prairie View A&M was able to hold JSU scoreless in the fourth quarter and subsequently run the clock out after picking up a first down at the two-minute timeout to earn the title game win. 

Jackson State’s Jared Lockhart finished 6-of-9 passing for 156 yards and a touchdown. Defensively for JSU Reid Pulliam finished with 14 tackles including seven solo stops.

Prairie View A&M is the first road team to win the league's title game since the conference moved to a new format with the game being played at the home site of the highest ranked team at the conclusion of the regular season.

Peters and Starling were named the game MVPs for their impressive performances in helping lead PVAMU to its second SWAC Football Championship Game Title in program history.

With the win PVAMU clinched a berth to the 2025 Cricket Celebration Bowl. Prairie View A&M now moves on to face MEAC regular season champion South Carolina State on Saturday, December 13 at 12 pm ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga.
