BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A pair of solid performances has garnered Texas Southern forward Niya Mitchell the Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week honor. The league made the announcement Tuesday morning.
Mitchell, a 5-10 junior from Bay City, Texas, nearly averaged a double-double in games versus Savannah State and Michigan State. Against Savannah State, Mitchell scored 15 points and corralled seven rebounds. She also made three steals and dished out a pair of assists while shooting 6-of-9 from the floor.
Against Michigan State, Mitchell was a bright spot for the Lady Tigers, recording 12 points and 11 rebounds against the Spartans. The junior was also a factor defensively, swiping two steals and blocking two shots.
For the week, Mitchell averaged 13.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game while shooting a combined 52.3 percent from the field over the pair of contests.
