ITTA BENA, Miss. – No. 1 seed Alabama A&M fended off upset-minded Alcorn State in straight sets to advance to the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Volleyball Tournament Semifinals Friday afternoon at R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
AAMU won 25-16, 25-20, 25-9.
With Megan Evans on serve, Alabama A&M asserted itself early on with a 5-0 run to take control, forcing Alcorn to call for a quick break. Afterward, the Lady Braves (10-20) clawed back into it, taking advantage of miscues as well as a pair of kills by Mae Lewis to get within four.
The Lady Bulldogs ultimately cruised to a set one win, as back-to-back smashes from Alana Cox firmly put momentum in their camp.
Alabama A&M (22-14) continued to maintain its grip on matters, opening up the second set with an 8-3 run. Alcorn didn’t go away quietly, keeping itself within striking distance thanks to kills from Sydney Joseph and Daharri Thompkins. However, with the Lady Bulldogs connecting on their attacks at a .400 clip through much of the first two frames, the Lady Braves were unable to make up enough ground to overtake the top seed in either set.
Set three was more evenly contested, with the sides trading points early on. Behind sharp serving by Terra Brooks Alabama A&M began pulling away with a 12-2 run that turned a 4-4 tie into an 16-6 Lady Bulldogs lead from which they never looked back.
Maya Evans posted 14 kills, hitting .778. Me. Evans added 30 assists, nine kills and two aces. Brooks put away sevn kills along with a team-best 15 digs and three aces. Jaelin Gant put down eight kills.
Joseph’s seven kills led the way for Alcorn. Alondra Rivera Modesto added six spikes. Barbara Cabo dished out 20 assists.
