PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – A pair of goals by Begona Rodriguez-Bravo punctuated an early blitz by Texas Southern that was enough to power the third-seeded Lady Tigers past No. 6 seed Alabama A&M during the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament Thursday afternoon.
With the win, Texas Southern awaits the winner of Howard and Southern in the semifinals.
After a physical brand of play to start things off, Texas Southern struck first at the 16-minute mark when Desiree Harte found Bravo with a pass that she fired a header from to beat Alabama A&M’s Jodi Medina for the Lady Tigers’ first goal.
The Lady Tigers (7-7-3) continued to press the advantage and at the midpoint of the first half, Bravo again found the twine as Medina managed to stop a Mia Marshall attempt, only for the ball to rebound back to Bravo, who tapped it home to make the match 2-0.
Following the early storm, Alabama A&M threatened, but Alexis Robles made a diving save on a Valery Mastache attempt, putting an end to the Lady Bulldogs’ best chance of the half.
From that point, defense took over the match. While Alabama A&M was able to keep the clamps on Texas Southern the rest of the way, the Lady Bulldogs failed to solve the Texas Southern defense in hopes of manufacturing a comeback.
In all, TSU outshot Alabama A&M 7-4, with the Lady Bulldogs (5-12-1) managing just a pair of tries on net.
Medina finished with five saves. Robles posted a clean sheet, making a pair of stops.
